What a great day! That easily sums up Sunday’s Bark in the Park 2008! It was a gorgeous day with hundreds of people and their pets and just a great time had by all. While Bark in the Park is a fund-raising event for our shelter, it is also a celebration of the bond between all of us animal lovers and our pets. There aren’t many venues where over 800 people and likely 300-400 pets can come together for an afternoon of such fun.

It takes a lot of people to make an event of this kind a success, and we thank each and every person who volunteered their time to help us set up and execute such a great day, all of the vendors, information and rescue groups who joined us and especially all who joined us for such a wonderful afternoon. We will list all of our volunteers, vendors and sponsors on our website as there is simply not enough space here to thank everyone.
But some do warrant special thanks and first goes to Ft. Toulouse for being such a great location for our event and we hope many people return to the park with their pet just to enjoy all Ft. Toulouse has to offer. “Cecil & the Polyphonics" gave us great music all afternoon. We were thrilled that so many of our area media folks turned out to let everyone know about our great event so thanks as always to WSFA-CH12, WLWI, Y102, MIX103, Wetumpka Herald , Montgomery Advertiser, Wetumpka City Pages.com and WAKA-CH8. The Capital City Street Rod Association again brought their awesome custom street rods for everyone to enjoy. While the dogs had fun at “ Bone Mountain ” their owners enjoyed tasty hot dogs, BBQ and drinks from the Trinity Episcopal Church Youth Group and ice snow cones from Sims Cajun Sno-Balls. With the help of Dr. Hataway, DVM, MADOC’s Microchip Clinic was very successful and now 33 more dogs have this extra level of identification to help get them home. As always, the pet contests were a huge hit and we will post pictures of those who participated and the winners on our website (www.elmorehumane.com) to share with everyone. And if you missed purchasing one of our bright red “Bark in the Park 2008” T-Shirts, stop by the shelter as we do have a few left and available for purchase.
And while we had a great day of fun at Ft. Toulouse, some more great news is with all of our events this past weekend 17 of our great pets found their new homes! Many thanks to Bonnie Jones and Marie Smith for manning our table at Tallassee Trade Day on Saturday and to Claudia & Brad Rigsby and Patricia Campbell for taking our pets to the AUM Adoption Event in Montgomery. 17 adoptions is simply super!
As we told all our supporters at the end of the day – we do this to bring together all who love animals and support our shelter so well. So if you couldn’t join us at Bark in the Park this year, mark your calendar for Sunday, 27 September 2009 at Ft. Toulouse for another day of pet-loving fun! See you next year!!!
“I talk to him when I'm lonesome like; and I'm sure he understands. When he looks at me so attentively, and gently licks my hands; then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes, but I never say naught thereat. For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes, but never a friend like that.” ~ W. Dayton Wedgefarth
