Humane Society of Elmore County News – 3 May ‘10
Pet of the Week

Russell is a six month old neutered male Retriever mix who is about 40 lbs and just full of love. He is great with other dogs, has a wonderful thick red coat and is asking us where his family is for life? Our adoption fee is $100 for dogs & $80 for our cats and covers their mandatory spay/or neuter, basic immunizations, de-worming, microchip, heartworm check for dogs, rabies vaccination if old enough, and a free health exam. To see Russell or any other of our great pets, come to the shelter at 255 Central Plank Road, Wetumpka, AL, 36092, call us at 334-567-3377 or go to our website at www.elmorehumane.com . We are open for adoptions Mon-Thu 10-4, Fri 10-5 and Sat from 9-3.

What a great weekend it was for our pets!! From Friday through Sunday 31 of our pets found their new homes with adopters who either came to the shelter or to the PETsMARTs in Montgomery and Prattville in support of the Spring National Adoption Weekend! These are numbers we wish we saw all the time, but certainly won’t argue with this much adoption success! So dog trainers, heads up – you may see a spike in enrollment number in the very near future! And many, many thanks to PETsMART, all of the volunteers who helped us and to all of the adopters who came out and left with one of our wonderful pets.

We take our adoptions seriously as we want each of our pets to go to the best possible home. We only wish others would do the same and if they don’t, then even more reason to get their pets spayed or neutered to prevent more litters who won’t all find good homes. A stark example of this happened on Saturday when a family came back to their vehicle at the Santuck Flea Market only to find eight puppies dumped in the bed of their truck. This ‘dump a problem of your own making’ onto someone else is simply outrageous and the truck owners had no choice but to bring these only five week old puppies to our shelter.

One other thing we see most often with unwanted litters is that they are given away, dumped or brought to our shelter far too young. Our shelter does not adopt puppies or kittens until they are at least eight weeks old and we are pretty sure you will find that reputable breeders also never sell their puppies or kittens younger than eight weeks. Besides the nutritional advantage of staying with mom long enough, puppies and kittens learn a lot of lessons from their mothers as they grow. Puppies weaned too early can develop potential health and behavior challenges down the road – some of which are cute, some irritating and some may result in that pet being given away, abandoned or taken to a shelter down the road. So, if you do have a litter of puppies or kittens, please try to keep them until they are a bit older and if at all possible, they should receive their first set of vaccinations and de-worming treatments to help protect them from disease and internal parasites. If you do have to bring them to the shelter it also helps if they are as close to eight weeks old as possible since space is our limiting factor and being able to place them for adoption immediately truly helps.

In celebration of Shelter Pets, the US Postal Service released its newest stamp on 1 May, the “Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet” stamps. We were happy to join in the unveiling of these great stamps at the Montgomery PETsMART on Saturday and hope that everyone who loves pets will buy these stamps to help raise awareness of the challenges that homeless pets and sheltering agencies face every day. And if getting to your post office is a challenge, you can order these stamps on-line by going to www.stampstotherescue.com .
